It all started when I received an Instagram message from a very excited boyfriend: “I want to propose and I want photos of her excitement. How can we make that happen?!”
Being invited into exciting, monumental, thrilling moments is basically my favorite part of being a photographer, so being able to help create and document a magical Stanley Park proposal has quickly become the highlight of my year so far.
After coordinating with Cezar and choosing the location and date, my storytelling (cough, cough lying) skills were put to the test when I messaged Adielle asking if she’d come model for me (I semi-regularly put out model calls on Instagram and she’s expressed interest in the past AND helped me before, too, so it wasn’t completely out of the blue!) because I “needed to practice some new techniques.” (Not entirely a lie, for the record…but definitely not the complete truth!)
The photoshoot started as a standard session — photos of Adielle, photos of Adielle with Cezar, and all my goofy jokes along the way — but then I said the code word so Cezar knew it was time and then I set up a “new pose” to test. She challenged my techniques and I spun a tale in which I tried to explain my odd request while consoling Adielle that I hadn’t gone completely off my rocker.
Not telling my secret technique, just in case a future model is actually a setup too . . . but let’s just say IT WORKED and Adielle was absolutely SHOCKED.
Happily engaged (and a little giddy with the excitement), we took some “just engaged” photos, too, and then they scampered across town to start telling their families. But here’s what you need to know: Cezar desperately wanted to channel the essence of Los Angeles, as the place of their dreams, so imagine the delight when snow-covered Vancouver put on a sunny show for us SO perfect that Adielle actually said at the start of our shoot that “this kind of looks like Hawaii” . . . a compliment which is essentially better than Los Angeles and basically the same. =D The perfectly positioned palm tree just added to the charm.
PLUS! Stanley Park was the location of their first date so a Stanley Park Proposal was only exactly perfect.
And this? My favorite image from the afternoon. Adielle looked around for me, excited to show off the ring (she still wasn’t sure at that point whether I was in on the surprise!), and Cezar celebrated our successful surprise Stanley Park proposal with a co-conspiratorial thumbs up. GO TEAM!
